Somerton Day Giving Back 2026: Resilience, Unity, and Legacy

Greetings, Fellow Somertonians,

We hope this message finds you in the best of health and spirits. While Hurricane Melissa brought significant challenges to Jamaica, it also reminded us of something! Our strength, our unity, and our resilience as a community.

Despite everything, we rise. We show up. We give back.

This year, we are called to go even further.

Investing in Our Future: The Bursary Initiative

As part of our commitment to uplifting the next generation, we are proud to continue awarding bursaries in honor of hardworking and respected residents of Somerton—individuals who have made lasting contributions to our community.

Our 2026 Goal:

  • Support 36 students transitioning into high school in September
  • Provide each student with a bursary of no less than JA$30,000 (approx. US$200)

We are inviting families and supporters to:

  • Sponsor a bursary in your family name, or
  • Contribute through a donation of any amount

All recipients will be selected by their schools, and donors will be proudly recognized for their contribution.

The spirit of unity, legacy, and transformation was alive and thriving in Somerton, Saint James, as the Somerton Reconnection Group hosted its third annual community giveback event—an occasion that has quickly become a symbol of hope and empowerment for the entire parish. This year marked the biggest and most impactful gathering to date, rooted in love, service, and a powerful commitment to giving back.

Held at the iconic Oneness Oval, the day was filled with joyful faces, heartfelt reunions, and purposeful action. From the very first moment, it was clear: Somerton is more than a village—it’s a legacy of excellence and resilience.

Thanks to generous donations from families both abroad and at home—many with deep roots in Somerton—students received $30,000 JMD bursaries, with two outstanding young scholars from Somerton Primary School, Tyrone Ellis and Hailey Anglin, being awarded brand new HP laptops along with their scholarships. In total, over 400 school bags filled with books, pens, pencils, and essential supplies were distributed to local youth, lifting a heavy burden from countless families.

“This is our way of giving back to the place that raised us,” said Sandra Dewar, a U.S.-based Jamaican and one of the key organizers. “It’s not just about school supplies—it’s about hope, pride, and remembering where we came from.”

But the event didn’t stop at education. It was a true holistic community celebration.

Volunteer teams from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), and other national agencies were on-site, offering vital services ranging from dental care and blood pressure checks to cholesterol screenings and wellness consultations. Even manicures and pedicures were available—reminding attendees that wellness is both physical and emotional.

Throughout the day, the heartbeat of the village echoed through lively reggae and dancehall rhythms, creating a festive atmosphere where generations gathered, reconnected, and celebrated. From domino tournaments to bounce houses, novel track races to coconut water under the sun—Somerton Day was more than an event; it was a homecoming.

As Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, Member of Parliament for St. James East Central, noted during his address:

“This is the essence of community. I want to see this replicated across the country. The diaspora’s involvement in giving back shows the true power of family and community.”

Somerton has long been a wellspring of brilliance. Its sons and daughters include former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, House Speaker Violet Neilson, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, film producer Lennie Little-White, Dr. Bizu Irving, and reggae artist Screwdriver—all proof that greatness is born here.

At La Familia Movements, we are honored to stand alongside the Somerton Reconnection Group and every volunteer, elder, parent, and child who made this day unforgettable. We believe in community-led change, in empowering the next generation, and in celebrating the culture, pride, and legacy of Saint James, Jamaica. 

What began as a single day of giving back has blossomed into what many now call Somerton Week—a beautiful expansion of community spirit and commitment. In the days leading up to the main event, residents and members of the diaspora rolled up their sleeves with purpose and pride. Monday through Thursday night, volunteers gathered at the Jimmy Cliff Oneness Oval to clean and prepare the grounds. By Friday evening, residents were in the Crossroads Square, engaging in meet-and-greets, sharing stories, and beautifying the heart of the community. Saturday marked the official Somerton Day celebration, but the work and love didn’t stop there. On Sunday, many were still active across the parish of Saint James—checking in on families, continuing outreach, and even helping build homes for those in need. What once was a one-day event has evolved into a week-long movement of restoration, unity, and generational pride.

This is what happens when a village remembers its roots and comes together to rise—stronger, prouder, and united.
